Sound Swaps

Keep the ending, change the first sound: cat, hat, mat. Swapping just the first sound gives lots of repetitions of the same ending and makes many words feel reachable.

  1. The ending stays the same on the right. Tap a first sound on the left to make a word.
  2. Tap Say it to hear the word, or Hear the family to run through them all.
  3. Notice only the first sound changes each time.
Coaching tips for grown-ups

Say: at... put a c in front: cat. Now an h: hat. What changed?

Watch for: That your child hears the shared ending and only the first sound moving.

Stop when: Stop after a family or two, while it still feels like a game.

Make it easier: Use Hear the family first, then have your child copy each word.

Make it harder: Cover the word and have your child say it before you tap.

Tip: tap the gear in the top right anytime for parent settings.
